Chapter 01
Grade and drainage before a single plant goes in
Crosby sits on the kind of heavy clay soil common across this part of the Gulf Coast, the type that swells when it is wet and pulls away from itself when it dries out, and it does not drain the way sandy soil does. Before a bed gets dug or a base goes down for a patio, we look at where water actually moves across the yard in a hard rain, not just where a plan on paper says it should go.
Grading has to carry water away from the house and out toward the street or a drainage swale first. Skip that step and it is usually the reason a new bed, a patio base, or a gazebo footing gives out a season or two later, standing water rots wood posts, undermines flagstone, and drowns plantings that looked fine the first summer. Grade first, then everything else sits on top of it.

Hardscape first: flagstone, concrete, fire pits and lighting in the right order
Flagstone and concrete both need a compacted base to hold their line, and that base only holds if the grade and drainage under it are already right. Fire pits need clearance and a non combustible base of their own, and landscape lighting runs are far easier to place before beds and stone are finished, trenching a wire run around stone that is already down is exactly the kind of redone work the right order avoids.
A gazebo or other structure gets the same base first treatment, footings sized and set before decking goes on, and the roofline and height worked out before a post hole is dug, rather than a kit that ends up sitting slightly wrong for the spot it is in.
Chapter 03
Tree work close to the house, clearance over roofs and gutters
Tree work near a house is as much about the house as the tree. Clearance over the roof, limbs kept clear of gutters, and enough room for siding to shed water instead of trapping moisture against it all matter more than how the tree looks from the yard. Overhanging limbs dropping leaves and debris straight into a gutter shows up as a maintenance problem, but the fix is a landscaping one.
Planting and transplanting near a foundation should account for where roots and canopy will be in ten years, not just what fits today. A tree set too close to the house is a much bigger job to manage or move later than getting the placement right the first time.
